Post pandemic

EDIT: I realize now that the pandemic is far from over. However, I think this article still bears a lot of truths. I wrote it back in July, with very cautious optimism, and a big dollop of over-enthusiastic disillusion..

Why did the pandemic happen the way it did? I think we will soon find out that the changes produced by it, were a sort of self-fulfilling prophecy.

People, governments, and organizations, tired, lacking direction, simply let up and let the pandemic run its course. If we had more trust in the system we would have taken action, to do everything we can to stop the pandemic from disrupting. The pandemic was not an overwhelming crisis; someone stuck a rod in one moving gear; and we all watched from the sidelines as the entire machinery of our world slowly, slowly, spun out of control.

Now, we can rid ourselves of our pretension — the pretension we lived in a world that made sense. In a world we actually cared about. We saw how little everyone else did. We are all disillusioned by the fact that everyone else, from top to bottom, stood with us on the sidelines. We are all disillusioned by how our friends, family, teachers, politicians, are all just as disillusioned as us. Everything crashed so easily.

Some have been stuck inside, and still are today — and they will probably produce the most explosive disruptions of all of us. Some of us were quick to let all the negativity go, as the pandemic is quick to retreat here in the States. We’re going out into the world with a smile and a fresh perspective. We are driving a culture of love, vulnerability, and positivity in this new historical period.

So why should I go to work? Why should I spend hours in useless meeting running from here to there with no purpose? Why live without intention?

Losing trust in the organizations above us is only accelerated by the fact that people on the top are just as disillusioned as people on the bottom. They carry out their perfunctory tasks with no intentionality. They are showing the people on the bottom that working is becoming more of putting-on-a-show than anything of substance.

Some of us have jobs with purpose — and that purpose will drive everything, now that all the boorish details have been revealed for what they are. We have little tolerance for meetings hours on end. Or going to the office when we can get our work done from our living room.

I am both optimistic and not. Good and bad will come out of this. I’m just excited for change. Just like everyone else.
